ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Affect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using physical techniques, handcuff and other restraints. Climb over obstacles; climb through openings; jump down from elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches and fences; and crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate and/or rescue. Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high speed vehicle operations. Conduct searches of buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve walking and/or standing for long periods of time and which requires the ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes. Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Pursue fleeing suspects on foot both day and night in unfamiliar terrain or surroundings. Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the law for purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior/response and performing enforcement activities involving the public. Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactic maneuvers or approved non lethal weapons techniques. Use bodily force to gain entrance through barriers to search, seize, investigate and/or rescue. Perform other essential tasks as identified by the Ferndale Police Department or the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Council's Job-Task Analysis. QUALIFICATIONS Must have a valid operator's license. Must have at least two years of college credit (60 credits), or four years of active military duty with an honorable discharge, or a honorably military service and college education acceptable to the department, or 1-year of sworn law enforcement experience. Must be in excellent health; eyes corrected to 20/20. Must be free from criminal background. Must have passed the MCOLES reading and physical tests. Reasonable knowledge of State and Local Laws and ordinances. Reasonable knowledge of the geography, streets and important locations in Ferndale. Reasonable knowledge of modern police practices and procedures. Reasonable knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. Skill or ability to attain skill in the use of firearms. OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT Performs technically skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, installation, and control of complex facilities, equipment, and systems to support the operations of the Water Treatment division. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Monitors and inspects facilities, equipment, machinery, and systems to determine need for repair * Leads work crews in the repair and maintenance of water, wastewater, and reuse equipment including water storage tanks, chemical feeders, tanks, pumps, motors, piping systems, valves, and treatment facilities * Coordinates scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of water plant equipment, structures, and buildings * Performs installation of materials, fixtures, equipment, and systems * Checks equipment for proper operation * Designs and fabricates equipment parts as necessary * Monitors and oversees confined space entry by crews * Maintains inventory of parts and supplies * Trains subordinate employees as appropriate * Acts as lead worker * Mixes and loads chemicals * Maintains plant security * Maintains O&M logs and records * Basic knowledge of the city computer systems * Performs janitorial, building, and grounds maintenance * Uses tools such as hand tools, shovel, jack hammer and power tools * Assist with snow removal activities and snow standby call duties * Performs other related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: * High School Diploma or GED Experience: Experience: * 5 years' work experience related to technical skilled labor preferred, as listed in the Primary Duties & Responsibilities section * 2 years in water or wastewater treatment operation and maintenance experience Preferred Qualifications: * Associates degree in water technology or water quality management preferred Knowledge: * Knowledge of chemistry, biology, math, and hydrology; pumps, valves, motors, filters, backflow prevention devices, piping, and pumping structures * Knowledge of the city computer systems * Knowledge of servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical principles. * Knowledge of safety practices and requirements of a water treatment plant * Knowledge of personal computers and related software. Essential Personnel: * When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: * Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time. * Continuous walking and standing. * Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing. * Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles. * Clear vision to read and interpret reports, other written documents, process and equipment gauges, and alarms. * Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens. * Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals. Work Environment: * Works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes. * Works in and around chemical feed areas with exposure to hazardous chemicals while wearing appropriate PPE. * Some work may be performed in confined spaces with exposure to raw sewage; will be exposed to low and medium electrical voltage. * Participate in the City's snow removal program.
