City of Folsom company history timeline

1946

The local Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign to incorporate Folsom as a city in 1946.

1955

Folsom Dam was built in 1955 to control flooding in Sacramento, and to provide hydroelectric power and recreation.

1961

Rat Pack member Sammy Davis, Jr. performed at the prison in 1961.

1968

Johnny Cash put Folsom on the map with his hit single “Folsom Prison Blues“. He later visited the prison to record an album in 1968.

1995

1995: Folsom Dam gate failure.

1999

Lake Natoma Crossing was completed in 1999 to alleviate traffic congestion and smooth the traffic flow across Folsom.

2000

The Historic Truss Bridge was returned from Siskiyou County in 2000 and placed on its original footings to be used as a bicycle and pedestrian bridge.

2002

In 2002, Folsom Dam Road was closed, causing massive traffic problems.

2007

The American River Watershed Project funded Folsom Dam upgrades beginning in 2007.

2014

The Johnny Cash Trail and Bike/Pedestrian Overcrossing opened in 2014.

2017

The Robbers’ Ravine Bike/Pedestrian Bridge was added when the second phase of the trail opened in 2017.

2019

The bridge celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019.
