On March 17, 1902, the Woodley post office was renamed Quay, in honor of United States Senator Mathew S. Quay of Pennsylvania.

Initial dredging began in 1920, then halted while the jetties were built.

The dredge Tuscawilla appeared on the river in the spring of 1921 and recommenced throwing dirt on April 19.

According to a TCPalm report by St Lucie County columnist Anthony Westbury, Lucia Zora Card, a celebrated circus animal trainer billed as “the bravest woman in the world,’’ died in Fort Pierce in 1936.

Many Treasure Coast residents are familiar with Harlem Renaissance author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, who lived and died in Fort Pierce in 1960.

The city of Port St Lucie, about 15 miles (25 km) south of Fort Pierce, was created and incorporated in 1961.

In 1989 the name of the Authority was changed to the St Lucie County Port and Airport Authority.

In 1997 the Florida Legislature provided reorganizing, updating and clarifying provisions for the Authority.

The updated Plan was presented to St Lucie County in February, 2002 and finalized with state agencies in June 30, 2002.

Blind Creek Beach is located at 5460 S. Ocean Drive, and although casual-nude use has a long history there, it wasn't until June 2014 that it was recognized as lawful by local law enforcement, according to the Treasure Coast Naturists.
