Garden Grove Becomes a City Residents formally decided to incorporate their town on June 18, 1956, to become the City of Garden Grove.

The City of Garden Grove established a municipal water department in 1958 and soon became the primary water retailer within City boundaries.
The "District System" and its 6,600 accounts were acquired from the City of Orange in 1960.

The Garden Grove Unified School District was established July 1965.
The City of Garden Grove bought the Dyke Water Company in 1965 in an effort to consolidate the City's water systems and provide a safe and reliable water supply.
He was well received and soon opened a $3 million “walk-in, drive-in” where he preached to parishioners inside & outside (in 500 cars) at the same time! In 1968, he bought an adjoining 10-acre walnut grove to build his gleaming future, the 2,700-seat Crystal Cathedral.
In 1970, Doctor Doig reports the population of the city of Garden Grove, California, had grown to 123,200 persons, and the city incorporated an area of 17.4 square miles; thus, the average population density was 7,080 persons per square mile in 1970.
By the end of 1974, eight veteran fire fighters had entered paramedic training at Orange County Medical Center (now U.C.I. Medical Center).
One of the city’s most prominent features is the Crystal Cathedral (1980; designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee), which has more than 10,000 panes of tempered silver glass.

In 1993, the City began the process to consolidate sanitation services of two special districts, the Garden Grove Sanitary and Midway City Sanitary District, into one provider, the City of Garden Grove.

In May of 1997, the City officially consolidated its sewer maintenance, refuse collection, and recycling efforts under one organization, the Garden Grove Sanitary District.
In 2005, the Garden Grove Historical Society (GGHS) published a book of historical photographs (with some text) entitled, Images of America Garden Grove -- GGHS price: $21.50 including tax.
The 2008-09 GGUSD budget is $503.2 million, making the district the largest enterprise in Garden Grove.

With the critical need to continue providing higher levels of service to a constantly growing community, on August 16, 2019, the Orange County Fire Authority took over fire protection services for the City of Garden Grove.
While 2019 begins a new chapter in Garden Grove's fire protection history, the Garden Grove Fire Department will forever hold a cherished place in the heart of the community for generations to come.
