City of Grand Island company history timeline

1872

The town-site grew into a small city and was incorporated on December 10th, 1872.

1873

The town had so increased in size that, early in the year 1873, it was determined to incorporate Grand Island as a city, which was done in the spring, with the following officers: R. C. Jordan, Mayor; W. H. Platt, Judge; and W. C. Buderus, Clerk.

The Grand Island Semi-Weekly Times, was established July 16, 1873, by Charles P. R. Williams.

1874

The Baptist Church was occupied for services, until March, 1874, after which they held their meetings in the court house, until the completion of their church the following summer.

1877

A post office was established on Grand Island on October 9, 1877.

1877 "Duke of Grand Island" Ossian Bedell built and opened famous Bedell House Hotel.

1878

The history of the foundry is as follows: In October, 1878, it was established by Edward Hooper and the Ferguson brothers, under the firm name of Ferguson Bros. & Co.

1879

Attended school there until fourteen years of age when he began clerking, which occupation he followed until coming to Nebraska, in December, 1879.

The educational interests of the city are regarded by its citizens as of the greatest importance. It is a large brick edifice, built in 1879, at a cost of upward of $20,000.

1880

It has a large and growing business. It was incorporated in January, 1880, with a paid up capital stock of $40,000, and does a general banking business.

Work began on them in 1880, and has continued to the present time, but they are not yet completed.

C. F. Bentley is a private banker, with the bank on Third, between Locust and Pine streets. It was established early in 1880.

1881

The Grand Island Building and Loan Association was incorporated September 30, 1881.

In the spring of 1881, the entire business was purchased by Edward Hooper, who has continued to enlarge the capacity of the factory, and is now doing a large business, and the foundry is in a flourishing condition.

1882

The Evangelical Lutheran.--In the due course of events in the history of the town, this church was organized, and on the fifteenth day of March, 1882, it became incorporated.

In April, 1882, bonds of $15,000 were voted, but have since been decided to be illegal.

In the spring of 1882, it was sold to W. H. Michael.

1885

In September of 1885 voters approved a $35,000 bond to construct a water pumping plant and distribution system.

1887

1887 McComb House built, later opened as the Island Club.

1887 Lewis F. Allen decided to sell his extensive holdings on the island.

1888

1895

The Grand Island Light and Power company (private) was established in 1895.

1900

C. 1900 The largest club in the early 1900s was the Oakfield, with over 400 members.

1902

The town post office after R. F. D. was established in 1902.

1906

Several private firms, the Grand Island Electric Company and Grand Island Gas Company supplied electricity until the city purchased the lines and poles from them in April of 1906.

The first two electric generators were built where the original Pine Street station continues to stand today (about 1/2 block south of 4th and Pine Streets) and were accepted by the city on April 9th, 1906.

1920

In the spring of 1920, voters approved a $50,000 bond issue to build the new ice plant adjacent to the Pine Street Station.

1921

In January 1921 the city delivered it's first ice to customers via the artificial ice plant.

1952

1952 The state purchased Buckhorn Island (the buckhorn is a tree) and some the adjoining land to create Buckhorn Island Park.

1957

In 1957, the C.W. Burdick station located on south Cherry and Bischeld streets started to take over for the aging Pine Street Station and to meet Grand Island's growing demand for electricity.

1965

1965 Second span of the North Grand Island Bridge opened.

1971
