Incorporated in 1868, in what was then Dakota Territory, and named for the swift flowing greenish river that courses through town, the City of Green River has a long and varied history.
John Wesley Powell embarked on the first of two voyages down the Green in May 1869 and floated the river all the way to its confluence with the Colorado and beyond.
In 1875, after some resistance, Green River became the county seat of Sweetwater (formerly Carter) County.
The town was established in 1876 and has the distinction of being one of the few Utah towns not founded by Mormon pioneers.

Vernal was settled by a party of Mormons led by Jeremiah Hatch in 1878.
The influx of railroad workers gave the town 375 residents by 1890, in addition to a fluctuating population of cowboys, sheepherders, and prospectors from the Book Cliffs and the San Rafael Desert.
As early as 1904 the United States Reclamation Service and the state government began investigating the possibility of building dams on the Green for water reclamation and power production.
In 1928, Wyoming Oil Products built an oil shale refinery in Green River, but failed to develop this abundant resource—probably because, as with many processes tried since, it proved too expensive to get the oil out of the shale.
However, Green River is perhaps best known for its 1931 ordinance prohibiting door-to-door selling unless the salesman was invited to a residence.
In 1938 Mountain Fuel Supply Company located huge trona deposits west of Green River, once again while searching for petrochemicals.
Some know that a part of the base was a repurposed Union Carbide uranium mill that was built during the region’s uranium mining boom of the 1950’s.
In 1956 work began on a dam in Red Canyon, on the Upper Green.
Flaming Gorge Dam was completed in 1963, and today the reservoir has become a popular destination for fishermen and boaters.
