The name Greenwood comes from a plantation of that same name, owned by John McGehee, dating back to 1824.
The first railroad came to Greenwood in 1852.

Greenwood county was established in 1897; the city of Greenwood is the county seat.
Greenwood County was formed in 1897 from portions of Abbeville and Edgefield counties, which had originally been part of the old Ninety-Six District.
In 1914, Citizens Trust Company erected the second office building to house the National Loan & Exchange Bank, one of Greenwood's early banks.
Uptown Greenwood did not have another hotel until 1985 when The Inn on the Square opened.
