City of Griffin company history timeline

1840

William Leak bought the first acre on June 8, 1840 for the tremendous sum of $1000.00.

Investigate 125 acres of cemeteries dating back to Griffin’s founding in 1840.

1842

In 1842, the first steam engine came through town.

1843

Griffin was officially incorporated on December 28, 1843.

Tough Times & Expansion The Depression of 1843 halted the Monroe Railroad’s construction.

1850

In 1850 the form of government changed to Mayor and City Council with Alexander Moore designated as the first mayor of Griffin.

1851

Not until December 20, 1851, was Spalding County founded.

1852

1852 by the Reverend Obediah Gibson, was bought by William Hammond and his Mother, Mrs.

1903

On September 6, 1903, the home opened as Griffin’s first hospital and first school for nurses.

1917

The Georgia Historical Society has published the Quarterly since 1917.

1918

The Mayor-Council form was followed until December 10, 1918 when J. Woods Hammond was the last mayor.

1933

In 1933, at the age of 21, Janet Harmon Bragg started flying lessons and soon earned a Private Pilot License.

1941

Frye became a charter member and vice president of the Georgia chapter of the Ninety-Nine's and served as governor of the Southeastern Section in 1941.

1969

The Griffin-Spalding Historical Society, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, was founded as the Griffin Historical and Preservation Society in 1969 by Seaton Grantland Barnes, John Henry “Jake” Cheatham, Jr., and John Hunter Goddard, Jr.

1970

When the Society bought it in 1970 for $25,000 had been divided into four apartments and was in complete disrepair.

1979

1987

In August 1987 the Society moved its headquarters to the Bailey Tebault House at 633 Meriwether Street.

2015

2015 stabilization of Griffin’s second hospital located on Meriwether Street, commonly referred to as the “Haisten’s Building”
