Although the present day Port of Gulfport was officially established in 1902, the area’s strategic location along the Gulf of Mexico has made it a destination for vessels for more than 300 years.
In 1902 Captain Joseph T. Jones assumed control of the line, and he and his family helped develop the city and harbour.
By 1904, there were plans to develop the area as a Civil War veterans’ retirement village.
The dock was completed in 1905 and, the following year, a way station and ticket office opened on the east side of the tracks out near the far end.
The founding fathers gathered there when deciding to incorporate Gulfport in 1910.
As a result of these new plans, the city became known as Veteran City. It was still small during this time, with the population only growing to approximately 300 people by 1923.
Unfortunately, when the Great Depression began in 1929, the town again fell into decline.
In 1961, the Port of Gulfport became a state-owned facility and has continued to expand its business interests and facilities.
Hurricane Katrina was a tropical cyclone that struck the southeastern United States in late August 2005.
