1809

In 1809, territory was procured from the Indians which was called the Twelve Mile Purchase.

1811

Land on the east side was for sale from the Federal Government in 1811.

Although Hager passed away in 1775, Hagerstown continued to grow at a rapid rate in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, in large part due to its favorable location at the crossroads of the “Warrior Trading Path” and First National Road, which began construction in 1811.

1814

In 1762 the town was laid out by the German immigrant Jonathan Hager and named Elizabeth Town for his wife, but it was incorporated as Hager’s Town in 1814.

1816

Religious groups had organized as early as 1816, with Salem Baptist Church being first.

1818

It was not until 1818 that land on the west side of the line could be bought.

1820

In 1820 a group with strong religious convictions settled in the Nettle Creek Valley near Hagerstown.

1822

About 1822 Jefferson Township began to grow in population.

1832

The town of Hagerstown was platted in 1832.

1847

In 1847 the final eight miles of the Whitewater Canal was completed from Hagerstown to Cambridge City.

1863

In July, 1863, Hagerstown played a major role in the Confederate army’s retreat from Gettysburg.

1870

1870 - In the new Lutheran church at Hagerstown, Md., a large hand is painted on the wall in the vestibule, pointing down to a spittoon with the inscription, "Please leave your tobacco there."St Joseph HeraldSaint Joseph, MichiganJanuary 8, 1870

1874

In 1874 a second brick structure replaced the first.

1888

1888 - The death of William T. Hamilton, formerly Governor and United States Senator, occurred on the 26th at his home in Hagerstown, Md.

1895

In 1895 a new Hagerstown business was organized, the Railway Cycle Manufacturing Company.

1912

Boy Scouts started in Hagerstown in 1912.

Built in 1912, the locomotive is 77 feet long and weighs 415,000 pounds.

1914

Later the company (Teetor-Hartley Motor Company, 1914) manufactured automobile motors.

1916

1916 Hagerstown, a city, the capital of Washington co., Md., on the Cumberland Valley and other railroads, 22 miles NW. of Frederick.

1930

During the 1930’s depression, Perfect Circle shortened work hours to keep as many employees as possible receiving a paycheck.

1968

1968 - March 8 - 6 year old Tommy Moore scores hole-in-one in golf (Hagerstown, Md)

1974

Historic Hagerstown formed in 1974 and purchased the three-story I.O.O.F. building at the corner of Main and Perry streets.

1982

In 1982 the town celebrated one hundred and fifty years.

2013
