A store was established on the site in 1846 at the junction of two stagecoach trails.
In the 1850’s, Henry Robinson built a tavern of logs beneath a huge hickory tree near a stagecoach junction.
The earliest phase began at the end of the eighteenth century and ended with the outbreak of the Civil War (1769-1860).
In 1913 Hickory became one of the first cities in the country to adopt the council-manager form of government.
