City of Hope company history timeline

1913

The City of Hope story began in 1913, when a group of volunteers, spurred by compassion to help those afflicted with tuberculosis, established the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association (JCRA) and raised money to start a free, nonsectarian tuberculosis sanatorium.

1949

In fact, he was dubbed the "Father of Modern Diabetes Research" after discovering the role of insulin in glucose metabolism in 1949.

2004

In 2004, Kandeel led the first islet cell transplantation at City of Hope, a technique that replaces islet cells destroyed by type 1 diabetes with healthy ones.

2014

In 2014, City of Hope established the Diabetes & Metabolic Research Institute, integrating basic, translational and clinical research with innovative care and comprehensive education.

2017

Then, in 2017, came the Wanek gift.
