Operates heavy equipment such as (Dump Truck, 5/10 Ton Roller, Asphalt Distributor Truck, Concrete Mixer Truck, Concrete Saw, Flusher (with tanker endorsement, F.E. Loader, Herb, Spray Truck, Lowboy, Pothole Patcher, Slope Mower, Bulldozer, Sweeper, and Bucket Truck) to transport equipment and/or materials to and from work sites. Performs a variety of manual tasks and activities. i.e. spraving. lawn care. moving furniture, roofing, painting, digging manholes, mowing, pouring concrete or asphalt, etc. Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles tools and facilities. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and eguipment. Observes and follows safety procedures and precautions the work site. May investigate and respond to complaints. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records. May act as lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel WORKING CONDITIONS This position routinely requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items of 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Six (6) months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate. Preference will be given to candidates with High School Diploma or GED. Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED None Department may administer skills assessment test. A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A UTILITY MAINTENANCE WORKER The Utility Maintenance Worker that will perform a variety of manual tasks associated with the construction and repair of water distribution and wastewater connection facilities as assigned. Work on construction projects, usually in utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require worker with varied experience and ability to work without close supervision. Essential Functions: * Install valves, water lines, and manholes; sewer pipes with appropriate fillings and tees. * Repair streets, sidewalks, curbs, and meters. * Assist in measuring distances from grade stakes. * Bolt, nail, align, and block up under forms. * Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications. * Gather and organize materials to be transported; load pipe, manhole, and various other materials onto truck for delivery to job site. * Position, join, align, and seal pipe sections. * Erect scaffolding, shoring, and braces. * Mop, brush, or spread paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection. * Apply caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal crevices. * Grind, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete, steel, and plastic. * Saw lumber, dismantle forms, remove projections from concrete, mount pipe hangers, and dig out and clean around pipes. * Check stock in yard for job assignments and for up-coming jobs. * Perform maintenance on machines, trucks, etc., ensuring that equipment is greased, washed and cleaned, and oil is changed. * Pick up around job site ensuring that used parts and materials are not left, and that ground is leveled back to grade and sod is replaced. Education, Experience, and Licenses: * High school diploma or equivalent required. * One (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License * Class I Wastewater Certificate, preferred, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.

Erect scaffolding, shoring, and braces. Mop, brush, or spread paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection. Apply caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal crevices. Grind, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete, steel, and plastic. Saw lumber, dismantle forms, remove projections from concrete, mount pipe hangers, and dig out and clean around pipes. Check stock in yard for job assignments and for up-coming jobs. Perform maintenance on machines, trucks, etc., ensuring that equipment is greased, washed and cleaned, and oil is changed. Pick up around job site ensuring that used parts and materials are not left, and that ground is leveled back to grade and sod is replaced. Education, Experience, and Licenses: High school diploma or equivalent required. One (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
