* Performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair duties for water systems and facilities.
* Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, installations, lubrications, and repairs on rotating equipment, piping, pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, valves, lines, water systems, facilities, and equipment.
* Maintains and repairs equipment, and tools used to perform responsibilities.
* Collects and catalogs data on installed equipment.
* Makes service calls to maintain and repair equipment and install equipment identification tags.
* Reports unsafe conditions and equipment to proper authorities. Keeps records of service calls, maintenance and repair work.
* May be required to drive a City vehicle and maintain vehicle maintenance and mileage records.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward position for long periods of time.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier I Level.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and mathematical functions as might be acquired through specialized training up to nine months education or training beyond the high school level. Requires simple vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of building or mechanical maintenance are required or one (1) year as an operator trainee and two years in building or mechanical maintenance.
One year directly related college or vocational education may be substituted for up to one year of work experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Preference will also be given to candidates with training and experience in the corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to equipment such as centrifugal pump maintenance, motors, air compressors, piping, blowers, valves and hydraulic equipment.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs skilled work in maintenance of gasoline and diesel automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, heavy construction equipment, pumps, mowers, small engines, etc. Performs routine maintenance mechanical repairs; diagnostic and tests.
