This position serves as a journeymen Plumber in the Facilities Management Service Line, Maintenance & Operations Section, Preventive Maintenance Shop at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Duties include: * Perform the full range of journey level plumbing tasks including installing and maintaining supply and disposal system and equipment such as: sewage, water, oil, gas distribution systems, hydrants, water fixtures, lavatories, showers, sinks, fire sprinkler systems, dishwashing machines, gas fueled cooking equipment, etc. * Perform maintenance and repairs to building service systems, plumbing, gas, air, vacuum, oxygen and steam; performs replacement and reseating of faucet washers, flush valves; repairs segments of piping by replacement due to wear and tear, unplugs major sewer stoppages, repacks valves, repairs steam traps, pressure regulator, and replace diaphragms in control valves. * Perform maintenance and repair to personal, fixed and portable hospital equipment, such as steam sterilizers, autoclave, bedpan sterilizers, water sills, demineralizers, kitchen equipment of various types, dishwashers, food carts, steam pressure cookers, steam pots, gas griddles and bake ovens; repairs consists of replacing door gaskets, replacing door gaskets, solenoid valves, regulators, temperature control equipment, overhauling water pumps, bearings, motors, couplings and pumps replacement. * Install, maintain, alter, and repair plumbing facilities, including: roughing in tearing out or moving toilets, urinals, sinks, work basins, laundry trays, drinking fountains, showers, electric water heaters, sump pumps, kitchen equipment, commercial and domestic hot water storage tanks, water heaters and circulating pumps, and hot water generators, etc. * Plan and lay out work ensuring proper routing, placement, slant, slope, fall and operation of systems and equipment, and determines what tools, equipment and replacement parts are needed according to work order, rough sketches or verbal instructions. Essential Job Functions: Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Plumber is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining pipes, fixtures and other plumbing used for water distribution wastewater disposal and gas piping in all City facilities. Maintains the flow and drainage of water, air, and other gases by assembling, installing and repair pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures. Maintains and provides the safe operation and condition of all plumbing systems.
