City of Irving company history timeline

1903

The co-founders sold the first town lots at a public auction on December 19, 1903.

The new town of Irving, founded in 1903 by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown, eventually included most of these settlements.

1904

The post office at nearby Kit was moved to Irving in 1904.

1909

In 1909, the Texas legislature created the Irving Independent School District for a student population of about 190.

1912

The house was built in 1912, and it is still standing until today.

1913

In 1913, the city built its first brick building that costs a whopping amount of $15,000.

1920

By 1920, Irving's population had grown to 357.

1925

In 1925, the City Commission appointed Frank Pate the town's first fire marshal.

1930

Despite the depression of the 1930's, Irving continued to grow.

1939

In 1939, Irving hired its first full-time employee, Town Secretary C.C. Anderson, who kept records, assessed and collected water revenues, and served as custodian of all the city buildings.

1940

In 1940, Irving's first paid patrolman joined the elected constable in keeping the peace.

1964

In 1964, the city of Irving opened the Irving Community Hospital.

1970

In the late 1970's, the Dallas County Community College District opened their North Lake College branch in Irving.

1971

The city financed the stadium with revenue bonds and opened the facility in 1971.

1974

When it opened in 1974, it was the country's largest airport.

1989

1998

The City Council adopted author Washington Irving as the city's namesake in 1998.

2003

The city celebrated its centennial in 2003.

2012

The following year in 2012, the City of Irving was the first city in Texas and the second in the nation to earn the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

2019

Completing the final phase of Irving's dynamic entertainment district plan, the Westin Irving Convention Center Las Colinas opened in 2019 with an energy all its own.
