In 1869, Johnson’s Depot was incorporated by the State of Tennessee as Johnson City, Tennessee.
In addition to “founder,” Johnson won Johnson City’s first-ever mayoral election in January 1870 by receiving 60 registered votes.
In 1896, Brownlow was elected to represent Tennessee’s 1st Congressional District.
By 1901, Brownlow’s bill passed Congress unanimously and the Mountain Home VA was built for approximately $2.1 million.
In 1903, the creation of the National Soldiers Home brought disabled veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Civil War to Johnson City.
The medical college was created by the state legislature in 1974.
