City Of Kirkland company history timeline

1871

In 1871, the Popham and MacGregor families became the first people to settle the area.

1880

In 1880, the Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works was built by Kirk and several prominent Seattle businessmen.

1886

In 1886, Peter Kirk stepped in to change all that.

1888

In 1888, Kirk, Hunt, and other men formed the Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works.

1892

The first wool mill in the State of Washington was established in Kirkland in 1892.

1893

The crushing blow came in 1893, when a nationwide financial collapse extinguished the hope of ever getting the steel venture off the ground.

1900

The Eastside in the early 1900’s

1905

Despite the steel mill's closure, Kirkland incorporated in 1905 with a population of 400.

1916

In 1916, the Lake Washington ship canal opened, providing a waterway from Kirkland to Puget Sound.

1917

The 1917 opening of the ship canal also opened Lake Washington to ocean-going vessels.

1955

He and his wife, Christine have been residents of Kirkland since 1955.

1960

By the 1960's, the interests of Houghton and Kirkland began to converge.

1963

A brand new elementary, Mark Twain, opened in 1963 and our boys were transferred to the new school.

1968

In 1968, the residents of Houghton elected to merge with Kirkland.

1974

In 1974, the Totem Lake neighborhood became part of Kirkland.

2003

2005

In 2005, the city celebrated the centennial of its incorporation during a time of increased population growth and development.

2021

COVID-19 Update: Most City facilities opened in August 2021 for public in-person services.
