Knoxville Municipal Court company history timeline

1874

Captain William Lyon acquired the property from the Cherokee Indians in the early part of the 19th century and held the land until 1874 when the Williams family donated a 300-acre parcel to the state of Tennessee to serve as the location of a progressive mental health hospital for East Tennessee.

1886

When it first opened in 1886, the first patients arrived at the Bearden Station and walked more than a mile to the new hospital.

1976

Thus on October 31, 1976 the board had decided to change the hospital name to “Lakeshore Mental Health Institute.”

1996

In 1996, the not for profit Lakeshore Park Conservancy was founded and a public-private partnership with the City of Knoxville was formed, signaling a new chapter and furthering the transformation of the campus.
