City of La Crosse company history timeline

1856

On March 14, 1856, the village was legally incorporated as a city and 50 years later, its massive Victorian city hall was constructed.

1859

And like the American Indians, French traders and European settlers who came before her, it was probably one of the first things 31-year-old Ellen Pennell Hixon saw when she arrived from New England in 1859 to teach school.

1878

In the years to come, a road was designed and built by the very man who had settled on top of Grandad Bluff back in 1878, Mr.

1900

With the decline of lumbering around 1900, La Crosse developed breweries, most of which had closed by the end of the 20th century.

Hixon gets most of the credit for saving the bluff because $12,000 of that money was hers,” said Derrick, who noted that the Hixon family’s arts and crafts-style home at 429 7th St North in La Crosse is a historical society museum that shows how upper middle class families lived around 1900.

1912

Grandad Park opened in 1912.

1975

“The first trail was built in 1975, and now they do a much better job of managing water runoff than in the past,” he said. “Trails are designed these days from a sustainable, conservation standpoint, with more being worked on and in the planning stages.”
