Starting rate of pay is $16.50 per hour with annual raises.

Duties require standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, reaching with hands and arms, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The Swim Instructor position teaches a progressive swim program to individuals ages six (6) months to adult. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety of all classes, completing the appropriate records, and providing an enjoyable environment for students to learn. Current pay for the Swim Instructor position begins at $16.00 per hour. Additional compensation is provided for employees who return after each season.
Position Responsibilities:
* Ensure a comfortable and safe environment for students to learn
* Teach individuals in each class based on the structure established in the Shawnee Swim Lessons Manual
* Communicate with students and parents the class status regarding cancellations, changes or information pertinent to their class or its enrollments
* Take class roll each day and record attendance
* Must be available for all days and times within an entire instruction session
* Complete lesson plans for substitute instructor along with pertinent emergency information and procedures
* Monitor the skills of all students throughout the class and record progress for future placement
* Attend appropriate training sessions and staff meetings as scheduled
* Perform other related duties as requested or assigned by the Site Coordinator or Aquatic Director
* Assist in promoting all activities sponsored by Shawnee Parks & Recreation Department
* Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
* Must be at least 15 years of age before May 31, 2026
* Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Oxygen Administration certification, or the ability to obtain prior to the start of the pool season.
* Hold current Swim Instructor Certification or the ability to complete the Shawnee Swim Instructor Training Program prior to employment.
* Previous swim instruction/swimming pool work experience preferred.
* Lifeguard/PA certification preferred.

Hiring Timeline:

Schedule:

Position Summary:
The Swim Lessons Instructor leads group and private/semi-private swim lessons. This role involves teaching participants with adaptive techniques, coordinating activities, assessing progress, and completing administrative duties. Instructors help maintain a safe environment alongside the lifeguard team while fostering an engaging and inclusive learning space for all participants.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 15 years of age.
Ability to demonstrate the following strokes:
Freestyle (front crawl)
Backstroke (back crawl)
Breaststroke
Butterfly (with minimal proficiency)
Side stroke
Starting rate of pay is $16.50 per hour with annual raises.
Environmental and Physical Factors: Work is performed in and around aquatic facilities with frequent exposure to sun, wind, heat, humidity, weather conditions, and noise typical of a pool environment. Duties require standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, reaching with hands and arms, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, have good manual dexterity, body flexibility, multi-limb coordination, and visual acuity.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successfully passing a drug screen. A background check is required for applicants aged 18 and older.
