City of Lewistown company history timeline

1874

Fort Lewis was founded in 1874 by the 7th United States Infantry's Company "F" to provide people who were traveling along the Carroll Trail with military protection.

1879

He filed for a homestead and constructed a stockaded trading post along Big Spring Creek in 1879.

Lewistown, Montana, (population 6,300), is located in the middle of the state. Its history dates back to 1879, when 25 Métis families, descendants of marriages between French Canadians and native peoples, established the first permanent settlement in the area.

1880

After gold was discovered in 1880 in the Judith Mountains nearby, Lewistown became a gold rush site.

1881

Longtime public school teacher Mercy Jackson says that the school first opened in 1881.

1883

Lapalme used Janeaux's fence as his starting line and it didn't conform with true North-South bearings. (That is why the streets are all off by about forty-five degrees). In 1883, the benefactor Janeaux donated eight lots of prime land to the local school district.

1889

The town site was incorporated in 1889.

By 1889, when Montana became the 41st state of the union, the cattle drive was an institution, and the state had begun to emerge as one of the country’s leading copper-mining centres.

1903

The Montana Railroad gave Lewistown its first train service in 1903.

1913

The Great Northern Railroad extended a branch line to Lewistown in 1913, and both railroads encouraged homesteading and the expansion of wheat farming.

1942

In 1942, during World War II, a training base for the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was established west of Lewistown by the US Army Air Corps for training aircrews for missions into Europe and North Africa.
