City of Logan history

The first leases of land in the Logan area were issued from 1849.

Logan, city, seat (1859) of Cache county, northern Utah, United States It lies along the Logan River (named for Ephraim Logan, a trapper), in the Cache Valley, 35 miles (56 km) north-northeast of Ogden.

In the spring of 1860, the Thatcher patriarch, Hezekiah, brought the first assortment of general merchandise to the city.

When the first bridge over the Brisbane River was constructed in 1865, this land was opened up for closer settlement and the rough bush track through Mt Gravatt to the Logan River was known as Slack’s track. ¹

The first sugar mill was Fryar and Strachan's at Loganholme, built in July 1869.

The Utah Northern Railroad (later part of the Union Pacific) reached the site in 1873.

When work resumed, a new foundation of rock was put in, and the building was completed in 1878.

The city’s agricultural economy (grains, sugar beets, cheese, livestock) is supplemented with small manufactures (pianos and organs, textiles, and farm equipment). Utah State University was founded there as an agricultural college in 1888.

Following a visit to Beenleigh in March 1889, local farmers started commercial dairying.

Some ten years later, after the passage of the Lund Act by Congress, the Agricultural College of Utah, a land-grant institution, came into being; it opened its doors to students in 1890 with a faculty of eight.

In a 1902 election, citizens authorized $65,000.00 in bonds.

After unsuccessfully soliciting Hercules to sell its power plant, the city bought the Scrowther Brothers dam and power house site located at 3rd Dam and city-owned electricity generation commenced in 1904.

By 1906, a meeting of farmers from the Logan Farming and Industrial Association decided to establish a co-operative butter factory for the Logan and Albert region.

The Southern Queensland Co-operative Dairy Company butter factory in Kingston opened on 13 May 1907.

In 1912, the Utah Power and Light Company acquired the Telluride power plant and the company's distribution system in Logan City.

In 1927, Logan City and Utah Power and Light agreed to switch to metered rates.

In 1938, Utah Power and Light's franchise with Logan City expired and the City did not renew the agreement and requested that UP&L remove its poles and wires from city streets.

The college, once known as Utah State Agricultural College, was renamed Utah State University in 1957.

Brisbane City introduced a new town plan in 1965.

In 1969, the Queensland Housing Commission developed large areas of land for public housing in Kingston and Woodridge.

Initial plans forecast the freeway to Springwood to be finished by 1970.

On 31 May 1978, Local Government Minister Russ Hinze introduced the Local Government (Change of Boundaries) Bill to create the new Logan Shire.

The council took over financial responsibility for the new shire from the 1 July 1979.

Our administration building in Wembley Road was opened in February 1981.

In 2008 Logan City was enlarged from 229 sq km to 913 sq km by absorbing part of Gold Coast City north of the Albert River (Beenleigh, Eagleby) and the northern urban part of Beaudesert Shire (Logan Village, Flagstone, Jimboomba, Cedar Grove).
