The oldest school in the system is San Jose State University; established in 1857 as a normal school, it was the state’s first public institution of higher learning.
The population began to grow, a school was built and on February 10, 1888 the city of Long Beach was incorporated.
Long Beach, city, port, Los Angeles county, California, United States Long Beach lies on San Pedro Bay, 22 miles (35 km) south of Los Angeles, and surrounds the independent city of Signal Hill. It was soon promoted as a seaside resort and was renamed (1888) for its 8.5-mile (13.5-km) beach.
In 1933 a severe earthquake caused widespread damage.
California State University was formed in 1960 by the Donahoe Higher Education Act, which unified existing state colleges under a central administrative structure.
1978: The Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center opened, adjacent to the Long Beach Arena.
LBPRM's Animal Care Services Bureau operates at a state-of-the-art companion animal care facility, the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village that was funded through a partnership with the spcaLA in 2001.
The newest addition is the Channel Islands campus, which opened for classes as a separate institution in 2002 after having been part of the Northridge campus.
The festival also included the FINA World Championships in men's and women's water polo.2006: Long Beach celebrated “A Royal Rendezvous” on February 22, as the Queen Mary 2, the world’s largest ocean liner, sails into Long Beach Harbor to salute her namesake, the RMS Queen Mary.
2013: Downtown Long Beach celebrates the opening of Harvey Milk Park and Equality Square, completing the multi-million dollar renovation of The Promenade from Ocean Blvd., to 3rd Street.
