1825

Farms in the area included Liberia, a two-story Federalist style brick house constructed in 1825, home for William J. Weir and family, descendants of Robert “King” Carter, the original land patent holder for Northern Virginia.

1853

Portner came to the United States at age 16, in 1853, from Prussia.

1858

Fewell had inherited the land which now comprises Old Town Manassas in 1858.

1861

Washington, D.C., in September 1861, he established a successful grocery store and brewery in nearby Alexandria.

Having made several feints to mislead Federal scouts, Jackson withdrew to a hidden position in the hills between Groveton and Sudley Springs, northwest of the 1861 battlefield.

Into this difficult atmosphere, in 1868, stepped a former Union army lieutenant, George Carr Round, when on his way to Raleigh, N.C., he got off the train and first saw the tiny crossroads called Manassas.

In 1869, he was named district superintendent of schools for Prince William County.

1873

Round helped write the 1873 town incorporation charter, establishing a town council.

1875

Mathis’ health declined further, and he died on his farm in October 1875.

1892

He purchased several other parcels of land, but in 1892, began construction of another mansion to replace the former Mathis home.

1938

After the 1938 closure of the Industrial School, the facilities were bought and operated by Prince William, Fairfax, and Fauquier counties as a regional high school for black students.

1940

Manassas National Battlefield Park (established 1940), just north of the city and encompassing about 8 square miles (21 square km), preserves the sites of the two Civil War engagements.

1955

Manassas Park was a campsite area for Confederate soldiers who fought in the First and Second Battles of Bullrun (Manassas).The road to Manassas Park becoming an independent city started in 1955 when the first homes were built as a subdivision in Prince William County.

1956

In 1956 a group of citizens founded a civic association.

1957

In 1957 the courts were petitioned and Manassas Park achieved Town status in the county. “The Park,” as the city was called, was governed by a mayor and a town council.

1966

Prince William County integrated its public schools in 1966.

1975

In 1975 Manassas Park incorporated as an independent city.

2007

The median price of existing single family detached homes sold during calendar year 2007 was $400,000; $300,000 for existing townhomes; and, $289,940 for existing residential condominiums.
