1806

In 1808 Ashbel Griswold began the manufacture of Britannia ware, made at first from a mixture of tin and lead and later from an alloy of tin, antimony, and copper. It became a separate parish in 1726 and was incorporated as a town and set off from Wallingford in 1806.

1854

The first settlement was made in the fall of 1854, William Was having selected a claim at that time.

1856

The first business house was grocery and whiskey store, and Shields & Chubb, at Mount Florence in 1856.

1857

The first marriage in the township was that of Peter Stuart and Miss Dunn in 1857.

W.F. Cunningham delivered mail to the Rock Creek station (not the same as Rock Creek, Kansas). In the few years before land was opened to buyers in 1857, the squatters who had settled here had many disputes over ownership.

1869

In 1869 Albert Owen bought it from the former owners.

1872

As soon as the railroad was completed, April 24, 1872, W. F. Cunningham built another small building just west of the tracks on Mr.

He was the postmaster at Mount Florence and in May 1872, moved his family and the post office into his new home.

In October 1872, after planning the railroad, he conceived the idea that this would be an excellent location for a town, assisted by N. Colby, surveyed and platted the west half of his farm into town lots and sold the remaining 80 acres to W. W. Peebler.

The first store was erected by William & Perry Riggs in 1873.

1895

In 1895, there was mention in Topeka paper about “Tosh Corn Harvester” being built in Meriden.

1898

The International Silver Company, one of the world’s largest silverware manufacturers, was established in the city in 1898.

1900

The city thrived -- with a population of over 24,000 by 1900, the year Castle Craig was dedicated in Hubbard Park.

1903

The Curtis Memorial Library opened in 1903.

1944

In 1944, the War Manpower Commission named Meriden “The Nation’s Ideal War Community,” for its industrial and patriotic contributions during World War II. Today’s economy is primarily service-based.

1960

English Puritans founded New Haven colony in 1638, and it reluctantly joined Connecticut colony (1665) and became a county in 1666; county government was abolished in 1960.

1978

Daffodils, long planted at Hubbard Park, became the city's official flower with the inaugural Daffodil Festival celebrated in April, 1978.
