Part of the land where Mission would one day be located was purchased from descendants of the original grantee by M. Guillermo Rene Guyard in 1845.

In 1861 a young French Oblate Priest selected Mission for the site of St Mary’s Indian Residential School, which included a church, workshops, and a grist mill.
The Oblate Fathers built a small chapel at Rancho La Lomita in 1865.

Founded in 1892, Mission, BC was originally inhabited by the Stó:lō First Nations people, and today this rapidly growing and dynamic centre is home to a population of over 41,000 residents.
The area from the Stave River to Hatzic Lake was first incorporated in 1892 as the Municipality of Mission.
In 1906, developers John J. Conway and J. W. Hoit purchased large tracts of land in the area, including that owned by the Oblate Fathers.
Since 1908, the City of Mission has grown from a railroad stop to a thriving city with a population approaching 70,000.
In 1908, the Missouri Pacific Railroad established a railway station near the center of the new development, 4 miles north of the mission.
Originally called Mission Hill Acres in 1926, this suburb was subdivided into 245 lots and offered for sale by the Breyfogel family.
By 1935 there were five businesses: a drug store, restaurant, hardware and dry goods store, a barber shop, and a cleaning and pressing establishment.

Incorporated as a city in 1951, Mission is where the heart of Johnson County intersects with the cool of Kansas City.
Presented to the City of Mission by the Mission Weavers and Spinners Guild October 18, 1999, the tartan was created to reflect the diversity of natural and industrial history of the Mission area.
