Planned in three sections, construction on the middle part of the canal began on July 4, 1817 in Utica and moved westward.
The old settlement of Frenchtown, which centered upon the square of the present Courthouse, took the name of Monroe and became the County Seat in September, 1817

At first it answered alarms from the Central Station but in the fall of 1927 it moved into the newer No.
Chief Roddy purchased several pieces of apparatus so that by 1945 Monroe had the following apparatus on line: One 900 GPM (gallons per minute) pumper and hose truck, four 750 GPM pumpers and hose trucks, one ladder tower, one water tower and one emergency "rescue" truck.
In 1946, Harvey Hales Sr. was appointed Fire Chief.
The first was built in 1954 directly behind the structure along Washington Street.
The Johnson-Phinney home was purchased with other adjacent property in 1960 and was then known as the Courthouse Annex.
A second major diecasting and diecasting factory was founded in 1960 by Don Westhoff, Albert Spalding and George Spalding.
Township supervisors sat as members of the county boards until 1966, with the board structure surviving two additional state constitutions.
In 1972, C.A. Roddy was appointed as Monroe's third Fire Chief.
The 1973 Optional Unified County Forms Act has led to the election of county executives in Oakland and Bay Counties.

George Douglas was appointed Fire Chief in 1988.
Kuhlman Diecasting continued until Pace Industries leased the factory in 1990.
In 1990, Diemakers was sold to Kanematsu, USA. There were 650 people in its workforce.
In 1996 Pace Industries was acquired by Leggett and Platt.
Jimmie R. Bryant was Monroe's seventh Fire Chief and was appointed in July of 1998.
The first announcement was made on April 2, 2002 and has since been maintained.
