1822

Montgomery, capital of the state of Alabama, United States, and seat (1822) of Montgomery county, located in the central part of the state.

1861

The capitol building is where Alabama voted to secede from the Union on January 11, 1861, and the Confederate States of America was organized there on February 4, 1861.

In February 1861, just before the start of the American Civil War, Montgomery became the first capital of the Confederacy, though the capital was moved to Richmond, Virginia, later that year.

In 1861, the convention that created the Confederate States of America was held in Montgomery.

1910

Maxwell AFB is on the site where Wilbur and Orville Wright operated the world's first flight training school in 1910.

1956

The reaction to this act of defiance led to the 382-day Montgomery bus boycott that forced the city to desegregate its transit system on December 21, 1956.

1965

In 1965, he led a four-day, nationally-publicized march for justice from Selma to Montgomery.

1996

The route of the march was designated the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail in 1996.

2004

In 2004, Montgomery landed one of the biggest economic development projects when Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Alabama built its $1.4 billion automotive plant.
