City of Montrose, MN company history timeline
1200 AD – 1800's the Ute Indians called the Uncompahgre Valley home.
The town that grew up around it was named by an early citizen who was inspired by A Legend of Montrose (1819), a novel by Sir Walter Scott.
1861 - Founded in by George M. Wright, Montrose was named after a town in Pennsylvania.
A bad economy, the Homestead Act of 1862, and the gold and silver rush created an influx of people into the area.
1866 - Montrose Post Office opened in Mr.
Since 1880 more than 400 reservoirs have been built in the piedmont to store water for irrigation.
The village was incorporated in 1881 and the first officers were elected.
In 1882, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Co. built its narrow gauge mainline railroad through Montrose on its way from Denver to Salt Lake City, Utah.
In 1890 the D&RGRR completed its standard gauge railroad from Denver to Grand Junction, leaving Montrose on the narrow gauge from Salida to Grand Junction and Ouray.
By 1900 major canal projects irrigated land for farming, and later lumbering and mining (carnotite ores yielding uranium, vanadium, and radium) became important.
Things started to turn around in 1905 when the Uncompahgre National Forest was established to manage and protect resources.
1905 - Montrose school was built.
In 1906, the track from Grand Junction to Montrose was changed from narrow gauge to standard gauge.
The Gunnison Tunnel, constructed to provide vital irrigation water to the valley, opened in 1909.
In 1909, the Reverend P.J. Blumekranz held the first Lutheran Service in Montrose.
In 1910 water diverted from the Gunnison River through the Gunnison Tunnel, 6 miles (9.7 km) long, increased irrigation facilities.
In late 1910, real estate agent Robert A. Walton teamed up with capitalist J. Frank Walters to buy almost 300 acres of undeveloped scrub brush in the southeastern corner of La Crescenta.
In December 1912 they held a contest to name their new townsite and selected Montrose, though they never publicly explained the name choice.
On February 22, 1913, Walton and Walters hosted a large barbecue and started selling lots in Montrose.
In the north and northwest the Front Range, the Medicine Bow Mountains, the Park Range, and the Rabbit Ears Range are major uplifts, and Rocky Mountain National Park (established 1915) in the western part of the Front Range is a popular destination for tourists and outdoors enthusiasts.
In 1918, the electrical age dawned in Montrose.
In 1920, a Constitutional Amendment was ratified (called the “good roads amendment”) which was established to connect the county seats in Minnesota.
Montrose remained a quiet town for the next decade and a half, though a few large buildings were built on the south side of Honolulu Avenue, replacing the decaying lumber barns that had supplied house-framing materials during the 1920s.
The Great Depression put the brakes on this growth and contributed to the demise of the Glendale and Montrose Railway, which closed in 1930.

Of all the housing units in Montrose, 6.1% of them were build before 1940.
1942 - Montrose High School closed.
Montrose” Roberts, were determined to save Montrose, and, inspired by what was done in Grand Junction, Colorado, turned the business district into a “shopping park” in 1967 by adding curbouts, benches, decorative walls, and extensive landscaping.
1975 - New Montrose Elementary school opens.
