1847

1847 New Bedford incorporates as a city.

1848

In 1848, Temple invented the toggle-head harpoon, which revolutionized the whaling industry.

1851

1851 Moby-Dick is published (first in London in October as The Whale; in November in New York, as Moby-Dick).

1852

1852 Commodore Perry opens diplomatic relations with Japan.

1857

1857 Peak year of New Bedford whaling fleet; 329 vessels registered out of a total American fleet of 593 vessels.

1860

1860-70 Norwegian, Svend Foyn introduces steam powered chaser boats & heavy caliber artillery to hunt whales.

1867

1867 Alaska Territory is purchased from Russia; America adds 586,412 sq. miles of new territory for $7.2 million.

1880

1880 San Francisco becomes the dominant whaling port in the United States

1903

1903 Old Dartmouth Historical Society established; operator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

1916

1916 New Bedford’s Hetty Green dies, a.k.a. “The Witch of Wall Street;” astute investor and America’s richest woman, leaves $100 million fortune.

1920

Around 1920, at the height of prosperity, there were twenty-eight cotton establishments, operating seventy mills and employing 41,380 workers.

Following the decline in whaling, New Bedford turned to the manufacture of cotton fabrics but was adversely affected by the movement of the textile industry to the American Southeast during the 1920s.

1954

In 1954 a group of area service clubs and businessmen organized the Greater New Bedford Industrial Foundation determined to reverse these trends and return New Bedford to a position of strength in the regional economy.

1956

1956 John Huston’s “Moby Dick” starring Gregory Peck premiers in New Bedford.

1961

They found their site in the far North-end of the City and the 550-acre park was officially opened in September 1961 with four plants completed and fifth under construction.

1996

1996 New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park established.

2007

The CCT community considers its organizing a direct response to the ICE raid in March 2007.
