City of Newport RI company history timeline

1853

Newport was incorporated as a city in 1784 and resumed the town form of government in 1787, but in 1853 it was reincorporated as a city.

1874

The historic mansion was built in 1874 as the private summer home for marine biologist and naturalist Alexander Agassiz.

1884

He helped found the Newport Historical Society, which preserved the Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House in 1884, and later acquired and restored the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, and the Great Friends Meeting House.

1895

After the American Civil War, largely because of a temperate climate and scenic location, Newport developed as an opulent summer resort with palatial summer mansions such as The Breakers, built (1895) in Italian Renaissance style for Cornelius Vanderbilt (grandson of the first Cornelius Vanderbilt).

1902

Completed in 1902, Rosecliff was modeled after Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles, at an estimated cost of $2.5 million.

1965

Newport was one of America's five leading seaports during Colonial times. It's where Bob Dylan went electric for the first time on the stage of Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
