1959

Three structures on the springs site, which were built for the state’s Quadricentennial Celebration in December, 1959, are also on the National Register.

Incorporated in 1959, the City of North Port, Florida occupies 103 square miles of southeast Sarasota County midway between the cities of Sarasota and Fort Myers, near the Gulf of Mexico.

1980

Since 1980, North Port's population has grown 120%, making it one of the fastest growing cities in Florida.

1982

For more than twenty years, starting in 1982, hot air balloons were a fixture on North Port’s horizon.

1990

The city grew to 76 square miles by the time GDC went bankrupt in 1990.

2000

North Port has grown 244.1% since the 2000.

In North Port, 63.7% of the total housing units were built after the year 2000, which is approximately 18,000 units.

2007

Grove, the author, was hired by the City in 2007 and has spent more than 18 months working on the book.

2009

In 2009, the City of North Port released its first ever commemorative history book, Out of the Wilderness, written by Marshall Grove.

2015

A 2015 breakfast meeting between Marty Black, then an official with the West Villages Improvement District, and Atlanta Braves Vice Chairman John Schuerholz at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville resulted in napkin sketches of what evolved into the complex.
