City of Northlake company history timeline

1949

Eldon Hayes was elected the first Mayor in 1949.

Incorporated July 19, 1949, Northlake had a population of 3,000.

1950

In 1950, the first city code was announced.

1957

One of Northlake's largest employers after 1957 was Automatic Electric, a telephone -switching equipment manufacturer later absorbed into AG Communication Systems Corporation.

1958

Sanitary sewers were installed, a three-million gallon water reservoir was erected, and High School District 212 built the West Leyden High School campus on Wolf Road in 1958.

1960

Northlake was incorporated on December 28, 1960.

A lighter memory affecting the lives of residents and law enforcement in the 1960’s was the visit of “Kay”. Kay was a 20 year old elephant, who had made her get away from the Keely and Miller Bros.

1994

In response to a 1994 land-use report citing Northlake as below the national average in open space, the city began renovating existing parks and opened a new 32-acre park, Centerpoint preserve.

1997

Jeffrey T. Sherwin, the present Mayor, was voted into office in 1997.

1999

In 1999, the Town of Northlake constructed its first Town Hall, which has since become the offices for our Public Works Department.

2010

Northlake celebrated 50 years as a Town in December 2010.
