The LACERA Legal Division is seeking two full-time interns this summer.
Interns will rotate throughout the Legal Division and have the opportunity to work with attorneys in each of the sub-specialties: Litigation/Employment, Investments and Commercial Contracts, Disability, Benefits. (For more information, please see below.)
This is an excellent opportunity for a law student to gain hands-on experience in a variety of areas of the law including: employee benefits, employment law, litigation, commercial contracts, investment transactions, public entity governance and ethics and compliance. LACERA strives to make its program rewarding and relevant to interns' professional development by exposing them to the types of challenging work and expectations they will experience as attorneys in the practice of law.
Some examples of representative work include:
• Performing legal research;
• Drafting board memos;
• Attending meetings of the Board of Retirement and the Board of Investments;
• Attending depositions and hearings;
• Reviewing non-disclosure agreements;
• Reviewing side letters and gaining exposure to limited partnership agreements;
• Analyzing the legal merits of claims for disability benefits;
• Assisting in responding to Public Records Act requests and subpoenas;
• Reviewing draft domestic relations orders;
• Assisting in the development and revision of policies and procedures;
• Preparing and presenting a capstone presentation to the Board of Retirement at the end of the internship.
Interns will meet with an assigned attorney mentor on a weekly basis throughout the duration of the internship.
LACERA is operating on a hybrid work model, which means that interns may work both remotely and in our Pasadena office on an agreed upon schedule.

LACERA's Legal Division is responsible for providing legal advice and representation to LACERA and its Boards of Retirement and Investments. Litigation/Employment
The Litigation/Employment section represents LACERA in state, federal and appellate courts in connection with member and other claims by or against the fund, including petition for writs of mandate, breach of fiduciary duty, and other pension law claims; oversight of outside counsel concerning LACERA litigation; reporting of litigation-related matters to the Board of Investments and Board of Retirement; handling of administrative appeals before the Board of Retirement; preparation of written documents; first and second chair oral hearings, arguments, and presentations, provides legal support to Human Resources Division on a wide range of employment matters including labor laws, discrimination laws under Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and California Family Rights Act (CFRA), civil service rules and workplace investigations; participation at the bargaining table during union negotiations.
Investments and Commercial Contracts
The Investments section provides LACERA's investment staff with legal advice relating to investment transactions; reviewing, drafting, and negotiating documentation for various investment transactions, including private equity, hedge funds, real assets, real estate, and public markets, and other asset classes; supervising outside counsel on investment transactions; legal support on a wide range of transactional matters; drafting memos, policies and procedures to the Board of Investments; drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts relating to investments; and drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts for all of LACERA's operations.
Disability
The Disability section assists the Disability Retirement Services Division in connection with disability retirement applications, providing written and oral advice to LACERA staff and the Board of Retirement regarding disability retirement law issues.
Benefits
The Benefits section advises LACERA staff and the Board of Retirement regarding pension benefits issues under the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937, California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act, and other applicable laws; legal review of domestic relations orders and other court orders; and handling of administrative appeals before the Board of Retirement.
Ethics and Compliance
In addition, the Legal Division assists with organizational governance and is closely involved in the development of a new Ethics and Compliance division.
The Ethics and Compliance section will support LACERA Board and management's oversight of LACERA's compliance with laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and LACERA's Code of Ethical Conduct. Activities of this division will include: performing operational ethics and compliance risk assessments with continuous improvement of operational controls; ethics and compliance training and education; advising on policy and procedure review; measuring and promoting an organizational culture of ethics and compliance; and regularly reporting on these activities to the CEO, Audit, Compliance, Risk, and Ethics (ACRE) Committee and the Boards.
Fiduciary Governance
LACERA's fiduciary duty to members and their beneficiaries is relevant to all that we do. The Legal Division advises the Boards, executive management, division managers, and other staff in the performance of their fiduciary duty and ensuring that the governance of the organization is consistent with that duty.

The Deputy Sheriff Trainee (Adult Detention) will attend the Stanislaus County Adult Detention CORE academy. This individual escorts, receives, registers, controls, supervises and cares for incarcerated persons and may be assigned to either the Sheriff's Detention Center (SDC) East and West Facilities, Minimum Housing Unit or Re-entry and Enhanced Alternatives to Custody Training Center (REACT). Deputies must be mature, emotionally stable and able to work effectively in an environment that is often hostile, unpredictable and occasionally unpleasant. Deputies must have the ability to direct and instruct groups of incarcerated persons; have a tolerant attitude towards those confined; be able to respond to a wide variety of situations and exercise sound judgment. This position is also required to work under a "No Hostage Policy" setting and performs related duties as assigned. Entry into the Deputy Sheriff-Custodial classification offers career opportunities in custodial correction work.
Deputy Sheriff Trainee's are classified as extra-help / part-time employees, working 40 hours per week until training is completed. Deputy Sheriff-Custodial personnel are peace officers pursuant to 830.1 (c), whose authority extends to any place in the state only while engaged in the performance of the duties of his or her respective employment and for the purpose of carrying out the primary function of employment relating to his or her custodial assignments, or when performing other law enforcement duties directed by his or her employing agency during a local state of emergency. This classification should not be confused with that of the Deputy Sheriff, whose authority to act as a peace officer has no time restrictions.
Trainees are expected to attend class regularly, maintain an acceptable grade point average, display class leadership, and conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the rules, regulations, policies and general orders of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. Trainees will also perform other general non-law enforcement duties as assigned by the Department.
Deputy Sheriff Trainees selected will be required to attend the CORE Academy at the Stanislaus County Regional Training Center. Stanislaus County will pay for the cost of the CORE Academy. At the completion of the academy and successful graduation, trainees may be eligible to promote into a full-time position with the department as a Deputy Sheriff Custodial.
Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments. Position performs related duties as assigned. Part-time County employees are automatically enrolled into the 401a program.

While attending the CORE Academy the Deputy Sheriff Trainee will complete Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) requirements learning to fulfill the duties of a Deputy Sheriff-Custodial, which includes the following typical tasks:
* Receives, books, searches, attends to and releases incarcerated persons in the SDC-East and West Facilities, Minimum Housing Unit, and REACT Center;
* Maintain order and discipline among incarcerated persons;
* Type booking slips, head-count rosters, incident reports, and other forms as required; Serve civil process papers;
* Serve as a hospital guard;
* Inspect sanitation and oversees the feeding of incarcerated persons;
* Supervise the daily activities of the Jail incarcerated persons;
* Analyze situations accurately and adopts an effective course of action quickly;
* Escort and transport incarcerated persons to and from the clinic, court, hospital, and State institutions;
* Serve as storekeeper and issue daily supplies;

The annual salary for the Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee classification is $102,260.07 per year. This includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay and a (3.75%) Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Certification Pay.
Upon successful completion of training, Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainees are eligible for promotion to the Public Safety Radio Dispatcher classification. The salary range for the Public Safety Radio Dispatcher classification is currently $109,443.99 - $133,053.03 annually. The SJFD is accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee. This is the entry-level training classification for a career in public safety dispatching within the City of San José. As a Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee, you are provided with formal training, both in the classroom and in the Communications Center, to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the full range of public safety dispatching functions. Trainees must successfully complete all formal academic and on-the-job training to be appointed to the class of Public Safety Radio Dispatcher and retain their employment.
Duties of the Public Safety Radio Dispatcher include answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, complying with medical and fire call taking and dispatching policies and protocols, obtaining information from callers, providing emergency instructions over the telephone, entering data into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, dispatching fire and emergency medical personnel and equipment, providing telecommunications systems support, and performing other related work as assigned.
The Public Safety Radio Dispatcher Trainee Training Program includes Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) protocol training. The EMD and EFD certification is a condition of employment. If an employee fails to maintain San José Fire Department protocol compliance standards, the employee is subject to discipline up to and including termination.
These positions may require working weekends, holidays and/or assignments including swing, midnight, or other nonstandard shifts. Shifts are currently an 8-hour schedule during training (five days a week). Shift schedules may change based on the needs of the Department, and may include an alternate 9-hour schedule (every other set of days off includes three days off). You must be available to work the shift schedule assigned to you by the Department. There is a shift differential payment of $2.25/hour for swing shift and $2.50/hour for midnight shifts.
Mandatory overtime will be required during critical incidents or to maintain staffing levels.

APPOINTMENT DATE AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The need for part-time faculty is greatest in Fall and Spring semesters. The Fall term begins in the late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term runs from the middle of January through the end of May. On rare occasions part-time faculty are needed during one of the Summer Session segments.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department in accord with the faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and University Policy Statement 210.070. These performance evaluations determine which lecturers will be retained for future and continued teaching assignments. And in some instances, syllabi, assignments and reading material will be reviewed by the departmental personnel committee.
APPOINTMENT AND SALARY
All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only.
Classification Range: $5,507 - $6,677 per month
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $6,221 per month
The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester. For a three-unit assignment, typical starting compensation ranges from $6,608.40 to $7,465.20 per semester.

Background / Pre-employment Polygraph Examination / Psychological Evaluation: The background evaluation will include a pre-employment polygraph examination and psychological evaluation and will assess overall suitability for employment only as a Kern County Deputy Sheriff Trainee. This evaluation may not indicate present suitability for other law enforcement positions or future suitability as a Kern County Sheriff's Detentions Deputy Trainee. Candidates must be found satisfactory in all respects on the Background Evaluation. Candidates determined to be unsuitable on this evaluation, or who have previously been found unsuitable, are encouraged to wait a minimum of twelve months before they may reapply for this classification.

Summary of Benefits for Detentions Deputy
Recruitment Bonus: The County will provide all employees hired on or after November 9, 2021, in a permanent capacity as a Detentions Deputy with the Sheriff's Office a $15,000 non-pensionable recruitment and retention bonus. The bonus shall be payable in full upon appointment by the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator subject to completion of a 5-year term of service as a Detentions Deputy rank or higher, including in any continuing capacity as a sworn peace officer with the County of Kern. Appointees who do not complete the agreed upon term of service shall be subject to repayment of the bonus with the following amortization schedule:
1. Less than one year of services - $15,000
2. Less than two years of services - $12,000
3. Less than three years of services - $9,000
4. Less than four years of services - $6,000

This is a 10 week paid summer law clerk position for those who will have completed some of their course work from an ABA-accredited law school and thus considered a strong 1L, or 2L or recent graduate by the beginning of Summer 2026. This position is supervised by the Deputy City Attorney for the nine-person, in-house legal counsel for the City of College Station, population approximately 120,000. The clerk will have opportunity to work with various attorneys and paralegals in the office depending on the project or work assignment. This is an opportunity to gain insight into public law and what it's like to be in-house legal counsel for a public entity.
The City Attorney will sponsor the hired applicant for their State Bar of Texas Supervised Practice Card.
General Municipal Law Practice. This includes real estate, contracts, employment and other general law areas. The law clerk may assist in title review, preparation of deeds and related real estate documents, organization of documents for various transactions, proofreading of contracts, and researching legal issues related to these matters.
Prosecution. The law clerk may assist the City Attorney's Office in municipal court prosecution of Class C misdemeanors. Work may include preparation and review of complaints, assisting in processing plea bargains and similar matters, and conducting legal research. Criminal cases prosecuted include traffic laws, City ordinance violations, DOC noise complaints, dangerous dogs, and class C assaults.
Public Information. The law clerk may assist in compliance with the Texas Public Information Act, including reviewing documents, redacting information, revising or preparing form responses, and researching matters related to the requests.
Criminal Law. The law clerk may assist in researching matters related to the City's police department including the investigation and prevention of criminal activity. This may include researching Fourth Amendment issues, criminal procedure and similar issues.
Litigation Management. The law clerk may assist in maintaining litigation files, reviewing strategy, pleadings, preparation for depositions, responding to discovery requests, and other litigation matters.
Land Use Law. The City has extensive zoning and land use regulations in place, and the law clerk may assist in the review and tailoring of various forms to specific situations or requests, as well as reviewing and studying of maps, plats, and other land use related items.
Other General Municipal Law Matters. The law clerk can gain experience with their legal writing skills. Unique to cities is the preparation of local ordinances, legal representation of government officials and how the law affects their conduct, such as compliance with Texas Open Meetings laws. The law clerk may assist the City Attorney's Office in its representation of departments by with proofing and reviewing policies and operating procedures. The City has numerous legal requirements on how to procure various items and services, depending on the type of item or service, the monetary amount, and the procurement method chosen or required. The law clerk may assist in researching, reviewing and preparing documents related to all of these matters, as well as attend meetings related to those matters.

Position Duties
About the Multi-Discipline Engineering Internship
The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking to fill two (2) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern positions.
Student Interns of the Multi-Discipline Engineering Internship will rotate within five key engineering groups across the Environmental Services Department. Interns will rotate into each of these five engineering groups approximately every six weeks. These rotations will include travel to three distinct work locations which include San José City Hall, the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF), and San José Municipal Water System (Muni Water). At the conclusion of the internship, interns will have job shadowed in each of the five groups.
The key engineering groups are located withing the following sections:
Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Division
The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) division is leading one of the largest public works programs in San José's history! The division is responsible for delivering a 10-year capital improvement program estimated at $1.4 billion and assuring the future of wastewater treatment services for 1.7 million residents and 17,000 businesses.
The CIP division performs the overall planning and project delivery for all aspects of the RWF treatment process, including program administration and budget planning. The division is also supported by a co-located team of consultant staff and staff from the Department of Public Works, who provide program management and construction management services.
* Responsibilities while working in CIP include but are not limited to: Supporting engineering staff on current projects in various phases of work, including feasibility, design, bid, and construction; attending project and staff meetings; attending design workshops; participating in construction site visits; assisting staff to manage facility-wide studies; and assisting staff in the areas of program management and controls.
Operations & Maintenance (O&M)
The Wastewater Management Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Engineering section works side-by-side with three divisions of wastewater management at the RWF - Plant Operations, Facility Maintenance, and Energy & Automation. The division is staffed by 226 full-time employees that includes operators, mechanics, various wastewater superintendents and supervisors, engineers, technicians, analysts, staff specialists, and other support staff. In addition, these groups are supported by various consultants. This section is responsible for managing various O&M repair/replacement projects, providing engineering support to the RWF, maintaining document management systems and record drawings, and providing leadership for the Asset Management system.
* Responsibilities while working in O&M include but are not limited to:
* Assisting with equipment tags, field verification, and creating missing tag lists.
* Assisting with uploading O&M manuals, equipment warranty documents, SOPs, and training related documents from CIP Final Submittals to WMDocs.
* Assisting with the review of preventive maintenance schedules from O&M manuals and creating PM schedule lists.
* Assisting with O&M Online Manual upgrades.
* Assisting with O&M Engineering projects.
* Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Pretreatment Program - Watershed Protection (WSP) Division
The Pretreatment Program consists of the Source Control and Environmental Engineering sections and is responsible for implementing the federal- and state-mandated pretreatment program for industrial discharges to the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. The program is required by the Facility's NPDES permit and is aimed at ensuring that certain dischargers have adequate treatment prior to the discharge of industrial wastewater to the sanitary sewer to protect water quality and the integrity of the wastewater collection and treatment systems. On an annual basis, the Pretreatment Program inspects approximately 350 businesses, collects more than 1,900 water quality samples, and reviews more than 900 self-monitoring reports. This group also permits and conducts inspections of newly regulated facilities such as dental offices.
* Responsibilities while working in the Pretreatment Program include but are not limited to: Assisting Sanitary Engineers in evaluating industrial and commercial facilities for compliance with federal, state, and local pretreatment requirements; writing and issuing Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permits; conducting plan check reviews of industrial and commercial facilities, and performing specialized environmental engineering studies in support of the Pretreatment Program, the Watershed Enforcement Program, and the Regional Wastewater Facility.
Municipal Water System (Muni Water) & South Bay Water Recycling (SBWR)
Muni Water
The Municipal Water System section is responsible for system operation and maintenance engineering support, and design and construction of the Municipal Water System pipeline and facilities. This includes managing the water quality programs, and supporting the conservation program, providing development related support services, ensuring availability of water supply, capital improvements, construction inspection, and engineering support to operations and maintenance.
SBWR
South Bay Water Recycling (SBWR) is a recycled water wholesaler to four retailers: San Jose Water Company, San José Municipal Water, City of Santa Clara, and City of Milpitas. Customers buy recycled water from the retailer in their location.
SBWR is the regional permit holder for recycled water in San José, Santa Clara and Milpitas, ensuring compliance with State regulations for recycled water quality and use and is a leader in recycled water in Northern California.
SBWR's recycled water system consists of over 150 miles of pipeline, five pump stations, and 10 million gallons of storage in reservoirs. SBWR delivers more than four billion gallons of recycled water per year to more than 960 commercial customers, an average of 11 million gallons a day.
* Responsibilities while working in Muni Water & SBWR include but are not limited to: Supporting engineering and operations staff through research, data collection, and technical analyses for ongoing projects. Responsibilities will include conducting field visits and site inspections to observe construction and operations/maintenance activities, as well as participating in staff meetings, taking notes, and providing follow-up as needed. Additional assignments may be given to further assist the engineering and compliance team.
Duration of Assignment
Approximately 8 months
Salary Information
Salary ranges for this classification are:
* Undergraduate Student Intern:$15.86 - $22.65 hourly
* Graduate Student Intern: $20.52 - $30.30 hourly
These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

Education:
* Undergraduate: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
* Graduate: Completion of a bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a master's degree program from an accredited college or university. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
