Plano, Texas company history timeline
In 1846, a merchant named William Foreman bought a huge land tract in the area to establish a new sawmill and gristmill business.
Pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee built a small farming community, and with the help of prominent local advocate Doctor Henry Dye, established a post office in 1850.
Plano was on its way to further growth when the Houston and Texas railroads were finally built in 1872; by the next two years later the county’s population had ballooned to 500.
The advent of the Houston and Texas Central Railways that came in the year 1872 was seen linked to the city of Dallas and Houston along with the new markets.
Recognizing the steady growth of the area, in 1873 the Texas Legislature passed an act incorporating the City of Plano in Collin County.
The library's name commemorates the efforts of Louise Schimelpfenig who opened her personal book collection to the community in 1884 and provided the city's earliest library service.
The 26,246 square feet Louise Ernestine Rammers Schimelpfenig Library opened in June 1980 with a collection of 25,000 volumes.
In 1997 the library was renovated and expanded to 30,000 square feet on two floors.
In 2002, the DART station at 15th Street began commencing service to Downtown Dallas.
In 2007, the existing merchants association of Downtown Plano was reorganized into a not for profit organization named, The Historic Downtown Plano Association with the mission of preserving Downtown Plano’s historic character and embracing its future.
In 2007, Plano was listed as the biggest city in the Collin County, in terms of population.
