The fire cadet position was developed to widen and deepen the pool of qualified applicants for firefighters to fill future anticipated vacancies. The city recognizes that the current part time firefighter program limits applicants to those who live within a geographic area and have a lifestyle that affords them the ability to respond to calls as needed and work variable hours in a non-benefit earning position. The fire cadet position eliminates the geographic barrier and provides temporary full-time wages and benefits to candidates while they gain education, training and on-the-job experience in the fire service. Over the course of two years, fire cadets will obtain skills and education to meet the minimum requirements of a career firefighter position and will be eligible to apply for externally posted vacancies that arise. Fire cadets will be immersed in a hands-on training program for fire and emergency services. Training includes learning fire suppression methods to control and stop property damage, learning rescue techniques for fire or other hazardous environments, learning to perform safety inspections and learning fundamentals of public fire safety education. This position is full-time and temporary, limited to two years maximum employment in the position. For the first eight months, the Fire Cadet will work a variable schedule, which will include Monday and Thursday evenings, with occasional weekends. The on-going schedule will remain variable with evening and weekend hours. Fire Cadet Information Meeting * Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 6:30 pm * Plymouth Fire Station 2 (12000 Old Rockford Road) Attend and actively participate in training Attend the academy to obtain instruction in such topics as emergency medical care, firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials response, emergency vehicle operations, technical rescue, and related all-hazard emergency response duties. Attend regular and assigned department training sessions to learn and upgrade firefighting skills. Learn correct methods to perform the following functions: * Respond to fires, fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency calls. * Maintain fire apparatus, equipment, stations and grounds. * Drive/operate fire apparatus. * Conduct safety inspections and pre-fire planning of commercial buildings. Study and demonstrate knowledge of and understanding of the information contained in study materials, manuals, departmental policies, procedures, fire and building codes, rules and regulations, and safety protocols provided by the department. Provide a variety of public safety, community, municipal services and miscellaneous tasks to ensure the effective and prompt delivery of services. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualification * High school graduate or equivalent. * 18 years of age on appointment date. * Ability to successfully complete physical ability test, physical examination, background check, drug screen, pulmonary function test and psychological evaluation * Valid Minnesota driver's license with a good driving record * Ability to meet required participation in fire department activities and training sessions. * Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department members and the general public. * Demonstrated conduct/performance that supports and advances the City of Plymouth's mission and guiding values, as well as the City Council's strategic themes. * Must not possess all of the following certifications: * I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 1001) Firefighter II Certification or equivalent as determined by the Fire Department * I.F.S.A.C or ProBoard Accredited (NFPA 472 or 1072) Hazardous Materials Operations Certification. * Current National Registry Certification as an EMT. GENERAL SUMMARY This position is responsible for welding on a variety of items, which may be subject to heavy stress or load. Usually welding for mechanical strength. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsible for welding a variety of items which may be subject to heavy stress or load. Usually welding for mechanical strength. Responsible for quality of work performed in welding area. Accountable for using caution in handling equipment, tools, and parts. Responsible for the general maintenance of both machinery and plant area, including cleaning and maintenance of welding machines and all tools involved in daily production. Responsible for good housekeeping practices in the welding area. Abides by all policies, procedures, and guidelines of the company including good common sense safety practices. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) plus one-year certificate from college or technical school and five years related experience; or equivalent combination of experience and training. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS None Required.
