Reno Police Department is currently filling multiple Lateral Police Officer positions. The hiring process will begin immediately upon acceptance of your application.
Upon successful completion of the Reno Police Lateral Academy, Police Officers are placed into the Police Training Officer (PTO) Program.
* Patrols an assigned area on foot, in a patrol car, on a motorcycle or other means of transportation; checks stores, businesses, houses, and other premises for burglary, and other disturbances; investigates any suspicious conditions.
* Makes arrests for violation of laws or ordinances; escorts prisoners to incarceration; and may register and book prisoners.
* Prepares record of arrest and submits detailed reports of investigation made; responds to complaints; controls crowds; cooperates with other law enforcementofficers.
* Enforces traffic and parking regulations; directs traffic; investigates traffic accidents and obtains information incidental to the event; as assigned, serves as an escort; transfers prisoners; administers first aid in emergency situations.
* Maintains relations with community through periodic meetings; may assist in the supervision and training of new recruits.
* Assists the public by locating lost children and pets; assists motorists with stolen vehicles; observes traffic hazards and makes recommendations for their correction.
* Keeps records and makes reports; assists superiors in their work and may act for them in their absence.
* Attends training courses and instructional meetings; may be called on at any time for emergency duties; may assist other emergency personnel as needed.
* Makes initial and supplementary investigation of crimes in areas such as personal violence, theft, checks intelligence, juvenile, and others; investigates cases involving missing persons, lost children, and runaways; interviews witnesses and complainants.
* Collects material evidence and does crime scene work; takes photographs; performs surveillance of persons and places; apprehends, interviews, and arrests suspects; prepares and submits reports; testifies at hearings and in court; assists other jurisdictions and agencies.
* Participates in undercover investigation of narcotics, gambling, subversive activities, vice, racial disturbances, and other activities, violations, and crimes.
* Makes investigations to determine whether juvenile offenders should be returned to the custody of the home, given a formal hearing, referred to a social agency or to juvenile court; works with social agencies, schools, and groups.
* Gives speeches, lectures, and demonstrations; keeps records and logs; acts as training officer for recruit police personnel in the basic patrol and/or traffic function and the training of confirmed police officers in areas deemed necessary by police administration.
* Completes performance evaluation of recruit police officers assigned on a regular basis; performs other related work as required.

Education:
* High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
* Two years of patrol experience (may include probationary time) OR
* Successful completion of the Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy (NNLEA)
License and Certificate:
* Possess and maintain the equivalent to a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at the time of application and at time of hire.
* Possession of a Nevada POST Category 1 Certificate, or an out-of-state POST Category 1 Certificate which has reciprocity with Nevada. Basic Certificate must be in good standing.
* If seeking reciprocity, employment as a Peace Officer (ex. Patrol Officer, street cop, etc.) in a reciprocity state or approved federal program as an equivalent to a Nevada Category 1 Peace Officer must be within the last 60 months (Detention and Corrections of any kind does not qualify for reciprocity)

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that "....an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who:
(1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
(2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
(3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.
(4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment."

Probationary Period: If selected for employment, you must pass all phases of the BCRC and additional drug tests during your nine-month probationary period.
Transfer Policy: Adult Corrections Officers Recruits must remain at the Facility in which they are appointed for three years from the date of appointment. Transfer to another facility location may be permitted only after the three-year period has been served.
TESTING INFORMATION
The examination for this recruitment involves "successive hurdles." Applicants must successfully complete and pass EACH test phase before proceeding to the next.
Qualified candidates who have successfully completed and passed EACH test phase, including the Criminal History Check and Comprehensive Background Investigation, will be contacted to attend the next available Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC). The BCRC is part of the initial probationary period and part of the examination process to determine the employee's fitness and ability for the position. The successful completion of the 9-week BCRC class is a requirement for membership in the civil service.

The job of an Adult Corrections Officer is physically demanding, stressful, and may be dangerous from time to time. All applicants must complete the COPAT (Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test) Course in 3 minutes and 45 seconds or less. The events are designed to simulate job-related tasks that Adult Corrections Officers must perform in providing security and in responding to emergency situations. 4. ORAL INTERVIEW
The Oral Interview will be administered on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai at a designated location only. There shall be no exceptions granted.

6. Criminal History Check/Comprehensive Background Investigation and Truth Verification Examination
All applicants are required to sign an Applicant's consent, Authorization and Request to Release Information Waiver. This gives your consent and authorization to release any and all records, information, and opinions regarding your background, education, employment, character and reputation needed by the Department of Human Resources Development and/or the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to make a thorough investigation to determine your fitness and suitability for employment with the State of Hawaii.
This authorization shall apply to include all criminal history records, information and opinions, military records, all educational and employment history records, and traffic abstract records. For this purpose, you waive any and all privileges you may have to maintain such records, information and opinions as confidential, including but not limited to the privileges arising out of the foregoing relationships.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications to continue in the recruitment process:

Conduct interviews, interrogations and identify witnesses. Process crime scene and evidence collection. Store and maintain evidence and property including narcotics. Maintain photo lab. Send evidence to other law enforcement agencies as required. Provide evidence and testimony in court.
Conduct auctions for unclaimed property. Provide for the destruction of evidence including narcotics as required.
Prepare clear and concise reports, records and other written materials. Prepare and document cases, complete reports and records and prepare and maintain logs and records. Operate photographic, crime lab and police equipment.
Investigate traffic accidents and provide traffic and crowd control as necessary. Participate in special details and assignments. Organize and coordinate special assignments such as crime prevention programs in the schools and the community.
Provide information, direction and other services and assistance to the public. Participate in community events and present to small or large groups. Engage in community policing efforts, use crime analysis data and other interventions to reduce and prevent crime.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.Perform other duties which may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
* Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
* Possess and maintain a valid driver license. Upon hire, possess a Nevada or "border state" driver license under conditions defined by Nevada Revised Statute 483.035.

Will I be required to pass a Physical Fitness Test?
Yes, all candidates will be required to take and pass the NV POST Physical Fitness Test (PFT) administered by the Reno Police Department (RPD) within 30 days of application and prior to being considered for hire. This is part of the hiring process, once your application has been accepted, you must successfully complete the PFT within 30 days. Candidates will be allowed up to two attempts to pass the PFT within that 30 day period. Exceptions may be made for weather or staffing related reasons only.

* Confers with offenders, legal representatives, family members and other concerned persons; reviews documents pertaining to legal and social history of offender as part of presentencing investigations and to formulate rehabilitation plan; communicates policies, rules, and expectations as required.
* Responsible for safety and security of courthouse facilities.
* Compiles and maintains detailed reports.
* Provides recommendations in regard to conditional release or institutionalization of offenders; informs offender of legal requirements of conditional release; installs, monitors and removes house arrest electronic monitoring equipment.

Education and Experience:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
* All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason.
