SALISBURY — In 1949, the Salisbury Police Department hired one of its first black officers — Rayford Graham, who would go on to serve 26 years in law enforcement.

The Salisbury Township Police Department was created by an ordinance of the Township of Salisbury Board of Commissioners and began operations in 1958.

The University of Maryland System was created in 1988 when a merger formed the current 11-campus system.

Linda Duyer began her research work in Salisbury in 1990 by documenting African American cemeteries and communities in our area.
