In 1877, the city of Sanford was incorporated and Mellonville was annexed six years later.
In 1880, Henry S. Sanford formed a land company in London to encourage investments in the new city.
The South Florida Railroad from Jacksonville arrived in 1884, and the community developed as a citrus centre.
In September 1887, a bakery on First Street caught fire.
During the winter of 1894-95, the citrus industry received a serious blow when freezing temperatures destroyed the year’s entire crop.
In 1911, the Methodist Conference authorized selling the original church property and constructing a new church here - 270 First Street.
The first services were held in 1912.
On April 25, 1913, Seminole County was officially established with Sanford as the county seat.
Henry Sanford lost his fight to have the Orange County seat moved from Orlando to Sanford, but when Seminole County was created in 1913, Sanford was named its county seat.
Many buildings and significant structures were developed during the construction boom that swept the nation during the 1920s.
In 1998, the City donated it to the Tajiri School for Performing Arts and Academics, founded by Patricia Merritt-Whatley.
