City of Shoreview company history timeline

1837

It wasn’t until 1837 that the land was opened up to non-Native American settlers.

1850

Pretty soon people from all over the country and the world began to farm there as well It wasn’t until 1850 that the first settler moved into the area.

1858

By 1858 the population in the area had grown to the point that the Mounds View Township was organized.

1880

By the 1880’s, the Shoreview area saw the first railroad lines being built.

1896

The house, made of buttery-yellow Chaska brick, was built in 1896 in what was Mounds View township and was first occupied by German immigrants August and Henriette Lepak, according to a city report.

1906

Hackney started the farm within the city limits back in 1906.

1941

In 1941 the Federal government purchased 2,530 acres of farmland, approximately one third of the city, for the establishment of an ammunition manufacturing site.

1951

Arden Hills was incorporated on February 14, 1951, in response to New Brighton's request for annexation of the area.

1957

On March 14, 1957, a group of citizens, feeling the inadequacy of a township government, presented a petition to the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners that called for the incorporation of the Village of Shoreview.

On April 23, 1957, Shoreview was officially incorporated.

On May 23, 1957, Kenneth Hanold was elected the first mayor.

By 1957, nearly 100 years after the Mounds View Township was formed, the residents of the Shoreview area felt that the Township model was not working.

"Shoreview Reflections" begins in 1957, when the city's population was about 5,000, and ends in the present day, a time when the area is nearly fully developed.

1963

On November 5, 1963, in order to better deal with the village's growing population, the citizens of Shoreview voted to shift to a "Plan A" form of government under which the village clerk and treasurer were appointed rather than elected.

On December 10, 1963, Interstate Highway 694 was opened through Shoreview.

1974

With a population of over 14,000, the residents voted in November 1974 to adopt the present "Plan B" Council-Manager form of government.

1994

In 1994 the United States Army formally declared 585 acres of this land in the southwest corner as excess, 427 acres for private redevelopment and the remainder for green space and other local public use.
