1800

In the 1800’s St Augustine began its renaissance with the arrival of Henry Flagler.

1821

In 1821, the United States swooped in and acquired the land from Spain via treaty and it’s been in American hands ever since.

1861

In 1861, the Civil War began.

1862

The rest of the 19th century consisted of wars with the local Seminole, Creek and Miccosukee peoples in a struggle for land, a huge spike in population growth by white settlers, and a fleeing of the population when the Union Army reclaimed St Augustine from Confederate control in 1862.

1887

In 1887, his company began construction of two large and ornate hotels and a year later added a third that had been planned and begun by another developer.

1888

Lightner Museum Lightner Museum is housed in the former Alcazar Hotel built in 1888 by Henry Flagler.

1965

The city celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1965 and undertook in cooperation with the State of Florida a program to restore parts of the colonial city.

1971

The first of Henry Flagler's three great hotels, the Ponce de Leon, was adapted for use as an institution of higher learning in 1971.
