The Minneapolis city boundary may have continued to expand westward had it not been for St Louis Park's 1886 incorporation.
Railroad enthusiasts may want to swing by the Milwaukee Road Depot, which was built in 1887, one year after St Louis Park was incorporated.
In 1890, lumber baron Thomas Barlow Walker and a group of wealthy Minneapolis industrialists incorporated the Minneapolis Land and Investment Company to focus industrial development in Minneapolis.
Tremendous growth was seen by 1893 with the downtown area establishing three hotels and the arrival of many businesses.
The financial panic of 1893 put a halt to further expansion.
In 1899, St Louis Park became the home to the world's first concrete, tubular grain elevator and provided an alternative to combustible wooden elevators.
It was built in 1939 on the western edge of the Twin Cities Metro, as one of several parks lining Highway 100, which was also known as “Lilac Way” or “The Beltline, due to the scores of lilacs and other beautiful flora which populated the lush surrounding landscape.
After standing unused for years, Nordic Ware cookware company purchased the land the elevator was on and restored it in 1969.
