City of Stamford Department of Health company history timeline

1830

The borough of Stamford was incorporated within the town in 1830.

As early as 1830 business interests had persuaded the General Assembly to approve the creation of the “Borough of Stamford” to serve the core area around Atlantic Square.

1868

In 1868, the City of Stamford bought the site, and the members of the Society recognized an opportunity to obtain an improved location and a more adequate structure.

Although Yale died suddenly at the end of 1868, Towne went ahead with their plans.

1870

They were installed in our present church when it was built in 1870.

1881

In 1881 the Connecticut General Assembly created the Storrs Agricultural School from land and funds donated by Augustus and Charles Storrs.

1892

Judge John Clason, sometimes spelled "Clayson," donated money to found Stamford Hospital in 1892.

1893

The information that follows attempts to point out critical factors that shaped the community of Stamford from its founding as a town in 1641 to the establishment of the City 252 years later in 1893.

1901

In addition to operating its museum in Stamford, the Stamford Historical Society, founded in 1901, maintains the Hoyt Barnum House, constructed late in the 17th century.

1904

The only purpose-built town hall still in existence is the Beaux-Arts style Old Town Hall, constructed to replace the one that burned down in February, 1904.

1913

The Bartlett Arboretum incorporates the original 30 acres of land acquired in 1913 by Doctor Francis A. Bartlett and used by him as a research center.

1939

As the mission of the college broadened, the name was changed to Connecticut State College and finally, in 1939, to the University of Connecticut.

1963

Pillar Candle holder: The tall candle holder used in our services was given in memory of the four young girls killed in the KKK bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963.
