City of Stayton company history timeline

1901

1901 – The first phone of record in Stayton, Oregon was that of J.M. Kitchen, MD, on August 2, 1901 on the corner of Second and High Streets.

1905

His phone number was “23”.On March 8, 1905 the Stayton Mutual Telephone Company was organized to provide telephone service for the town of Stayton.

1914

1914 – The Stayton Switch Board Association was formed to handle the switching and long distance of the community.

1924

Cooperative was established in about 1924 and its processing plant, to this day, remains the largest single employer in Stayton.

1940

In a speech he presented to the Chamber of Commerce in 1940, Gardner told the story of Stayton’s origins and its early growth.

1955

1955 – Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company was incorporated on January 14th.

2000

Just over one hundred years later, in 2000, the population had grown to 6,816.

2007

The latest state estimate, at mid-2007, has the number at 7,765 and growing.

2012

The Santiam SummerFest is this Saturday July 28, 2012 from 9AM-4PM in Stayton.

2019

Quigley previously had served more than eight years as a city councilor until he resigned in 2019.

2020

The matter came to the council for the first time March 3, 2020 and the planned use of the two parcels was reduced from more than 200 units down to just over 100 in the final plan on the property at 13601 Fern Ridge Road.
