City of Tallahassee company history timeline

1902

The first major alteration to the Capitol came in 1902 when the addition of two wings provided more room for the growing State government, and the familiar dome was added.

1905

When Florida’s institutions of higher education were reorganized in 1905, the school became the Florida Female College, open to women only; the male students were moved to the University of Florida in Gainesville.

1909

The name was changed to Florida State College for Women in 1909.

1919

1919 The Legislature passes a new city charter for Tallahassee, authorizing a Commission-Manager form of government.

1920

The 1920 City Charter abandoned the strong mayor system and converted to the commission-manager form of government.

1950

In 1950, the city commission was expanded to a 5-member board.

1980

During its first 150 years, Tallahassee expanded from one-quarter of a mile in size to 28.18 square miles by 1980.

1982

Luckily, the old Capitol building was saved and refurbished, being reopened to the public in 1982.

1984

Since the 1984 municipal election, the City has contracted with the Leon County Supervisor of Elections for the conduct of city elections.

1985

Since 1985 the vast majority of the City's annexations have been achieved through a voluntary process where the owners of properties petition for inclusion into the City.
