In 1845, Rancho Temecula was granted to Felix Valdez.
Even though Temecula was already home to many Native Americans for thousands of years, Temecula landed a spot on the map in the 1850’s when it became a stop on the stagecoach lines that were emerging throughout California.
A railroad was built in the area that is now known as Old Town Temecula in 1882.
The Civil War put an end to the great Butterfield Overland Stage Service; however, in 1882, a rail line from National City to Temecula was completed with regular service between the two cities.
Walter L. Vail came to America with his parents from Nova Scotia before migrating to California in 1904 with several partners.
The Vail Family purchased vast acres of land in the Temecula Valley in 1905 to move their cattle ranch from Arizona closer to the LA market.
Walter was run over and killed by a street car in LA in 1906 leaving the family ranch to his son, Mahlon Vail.
The first paved, two lane country road was built through Temecula in 1915.

They created their own irrigation system for their ranch which included the decision to dam the Temecula Creek in 1948 and formed what is now known as Vail Lake, a 9,000 acre resort East of Temecula.
