City of Tuscaloosa company history timeline

1819

13, 1819 the territorial legislature incorporated the town of Tuscaloosa, exactly one day before Congress admitted Alabama to the Union as a state.

1820

New Town had been established just west of the city of Tuscaloosa on 20 December, 1820.

1821

Lots were sold at auction in November 1821.

1822

The county seat was moved to nearby New Town in 1822.

1826

When Tuscaloosa became state capitol in 1826, New Town became part of Tuscaloosa.

1831

Instruction began in 1831.

The University of Alabama was founded here in 1831.

1860

In 1860 the University of Alabama became a military university.

In 1860 the university became a military school, eventually providing officers for the Confederacy.

1893

Women were first admitted to the university in 1893.

1901

Robert Jemison Van de Graaff, American physicist and inventor of the Van de Graaff generator, was born in Tuscaloosa in 1901.

1916

In 1916, the Druid City Infirmary opened with 10 beds.

1963

The court-ordered end of racial segregation at the university in June 1963 was initially met with protest by Alabama governor George C. Wallace.

1986

Also on campus is the Children's Hands-On Museum, first opened in 1986.
