1800

However by the early 1800’s, much of the land that now lies in Union was owned by the Fowler family, and Benjamin Piatt Fowler built his in what is now the northern area of the city c.

1818

In 1818, Franklin County was organized and separated from St Louis County and named after one of America's founding fathers: Benjamin Franklin.

1882

In November 1882, a joint stock company was formed by businessmen of Union and Washington to build a telephone line to connect the two towns.

1889

The post office of Union was established in 1889.

1890

1900

During the early 1900’s, the city was unable to field a slate of officers to act as a legislative body, and the official corporation lapsed.

1900, the Bell Telephone Company announced they would soon have the line connecting Washington and Pacific with St Louis and that Union and other towns along the Frisco Railroad would be included in the circuit.

1905

A bank was built in the city in 1905, and a large general store of two stories was located on the corner of Mt.

1907

The first successful factory in Union was the National Cob Pipe Works which was opened in 1907 by a small group of local business leaders who saw the need to help create jobs for the semi-skilled labor force in the community.

1924

The highway, popularly called the Meridian Highway and subsequently United States 81, was completed across the United States in 1924 with the spanning of the South Canadian River just south of Union City.

1926

By 1926 Union City had a population of approximately three hundred.

1968

In 1968, East Central College was established to serve the higher educational needs of people in east central Missouri.

1969

In 1969, a group of citizens felt that the time was right to reincorporate, and the modern City of Union was born.

In 1969, the area of the city was one square mile…which has grown to approximately three square miles today.

1970

In 1970, the official census population figure for the city was 233.

1991

2002

In 2002, the county announced an ambitious phased construction project that included a new justice center, an expanded courthouse annex and renovations to the existing courthouse.
