1821

Welcome to Lowndes County! Since the first settlers moved to our area in 1821 Lowndes County has served as a haven for those looking for something more.

1825

Lowndes County was established in 1825.

1828

When the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad decided to put a right-of-way four miles south of Troupville, the citizens of Troupville made an interesting move to ensure the future prosperity of their town—they picked it up and moved it four miles. Its first county seat, Franklinville, was established in 1828.

1837

In 1837, the City of Troupville became the county seat.

1858

He was Lenorean DeLeon, editor of the Wiregrass Watchman, at old Troupville, in 1858-59, the first newspaper printed in Lowndes county.

Valdosta’s Coca Cola bottling plant became operational in 1897.

When the Second World War erupted in 1939, a military airbase was established in Valdosta as the nation prepared for any potential involvement in the war.
