Lowndes County was established in 1825.
When the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad decided to put a right-of-way four miles south of Troupville, the citizens of Troupville made an interesting move to ensure the future prosperity of their town—they picked it up and moved it four miles. Its first county seat, Franklinville, was established in 1828.
In 1837, the City of Troupville became the county seat.
He was Lenorean DeLeon, editor of the Wiregrass Watchman, at old Troupville, in 1858-59, the first newspaper printed in Lowndes county.

Valdosta’s Coca Cola bottling plant became operational in 1897.
By 1899, Valdosta was the smallest city in America to install a public transit system.

With Valdosta’s selection as a Main Street City in 1984, Downtown began its comeback establishing itself as the center for business, government and culture.
